3. How does Eve’s story relate to bullying? Was she bullied? Did she bully? How would you explain her behavior?( perpetrator/bystander/victim?).
As a young girl I have seen many people get bullied and many people bullying me, but most of them time people getting bullied. I have seen many name calling and hitting, punching and shoving. I thought that it was really sad and mean but I was the one that was too scared to go and stand up for the person that was getting bullied. The bullies were much older then me and I was scared that I was also going to get bullied. After a while the bullies left and so I went and I asked the boy (getting bullies) if he was "ok". Then he said "Yes, I am fine thanks for asking." Luckily he didn't get hurt very bad at all, he just got a small scare. I have been bullied once or twice, but this was when I was quite young. The weird thing is that I dont really get harmed because I get bullied by my brother all the time at home. The time when I got bullied was when I was in 3rd grade in my old school. The person that I was bullying me was in the same grade as me. That girl was calling me names and making fun of my name. Which I thought it was really mean so I went and told a teacher and the teacher came out with me and told the girl to stop calling me names. Then the girl said sorry and she walked off.
1.Select one line/phrase/group of sentences that are significant to you. Explain why.
A phrase that I thought was important was "One of them read aloud from a small book, which I told was the girls diary". I dont really think its nice to read someones diary or someone reading it to you because they might have personal things in it. I mean personally I wouldn't read anyones diary unless they want me too.
To think about:
How is ostracism different from other forms of bullying? When does ostracizing or excluding someone from a group become part of bullying?
Ostracism means excluding someone from your group. It becomes part of bullying because you might be talking about the person that is being excluded. Some people have done that to me but I wouldn't care much.
1.What’s familiar about the incident Eve describes?
This is similar when so many people used to hate me because they thought that I was weird. I think now people dont hate me as much.2.What surprised you?
That people hated her when she was fine and that they made her do bad stuff like hear people reading their or someone else's diary to her.
3. How does Eve’s story relate to bullying? Was she bullied? Did she bully? How would you explain her behavior?( perpetrator/bystander/victim?). make sure you justify( back up your answer.)
Eve was getting bullied by getting called names and she was getting mocked. I would say that she is a victim because she was the one that was getting bullied.
Psychologists Michael Thompson and Lawrence Cohen point to the powerful influence of peer groups in guiding our behavior: ‘We all know that groups can go terribly astray in terms of their moral reasoning. Everyone not in the group can be considered an outsider, a legitimate target…It affects every group because we are all prone to that feeling of us versus them and the idea that if you’re not with us you’re against us. Speaking out against a risky, immoral or illegal decision is hard to do because that makes you an outsider yourself’.
4.How did Eve’s need to belong affect the way she responded when another girl was being mocked? Why does her response still trouble her? How do you like to think you would have responded to the incident?
Eve was also laughing at the other girl that was being mocked so that she could be part of the group. The response still troubles her because she cant believe the fact that she did this to the girl. I would have probably not got into this, I would have said that this is not nice.
5. Eve concludes “Often being accepted by others is more satisfying than being accepted by oneself, even though the satisfaction does not last.’ What does she mean?
She means that she is afraid that she wont have friends and she wants people to like her.
