Understandings

Consider the following statements:

  • A good leader considers the will of the people.
  • To maintain control, you must have power.
  • Standing up to oppression takes great individual courage.
In view of what we have learned in our unit on the Middle Ages, choose one of the above statements and justify it through examples from our unit and if possible with examples from modern day society.

The reason that I choose the last one was because I thought that it was true, if you want to tell someone the truth about something that is super important than you need to courage to tell them. If I had to tell my parents something something important than I need the courage to tell them. When we were in class and learning about our Holucast and Mythology unit we had many examples that would go with this phrase. One of them was when Hitlers followers had to have courage to tell him something and when we were learning about the mythology unit all the people that were bellow the King they had to also have bravery to tell the King the truth or something important, because maybe if they want to tell the King they might feel really scared.

1066: Who had the best claim?

Now, we know who became King of England after the Battles of Stamford Bridge and Hastings in 1066, but who do you think had the strongest claim?  Harald Hardrada, Harold Godwinson or William of Normandy?  Write one paragraph in which you state who had the best claim to be King and why.

If I had to vote then I would probably vote for William of Normandy because he is English and he would make a great King of England. He was the first one to say that he wanted to be the King of England, but he was already the King of Normandy. That is why he was named William of Normandy. Even the pope promised him that he will be the King. The good thing was since he wanted to be the King so he won. After he won his name changed to being King William.

Values and Choices

3. How does Eve’s story relate to bullying? Was she bullied? Did she bully? How would you explain her behavior?( perpetrator/bystander/victim?).

As a young girl I have seen many people get bullied and many people bullying me, but most of them time people getting bullied. I have seen many name calling and hitting, punching and shoving. I thought that it was really sad and mean but I was the one that was too scared to go and stand up for the person that was getting bullied. The bullies were much older then me and I was scared that I was also going to get bullied. After a while the bullies left and so I went and I asked the boy (getting bullies) if he was "ok". Then he said "Yes, I am fine thanks for asking." Luckily he didn't get hurt very bad at all, he just got a small scare. I have been bullied once or twice, but this was when I was quite young. The weird thing is that I dont really get harmed because I get bullied by my brother all the time at home. The time when I got bullied was when I was in 3rd grade in my old school. The person that I was bullying me was in the same grade as me. That girl was calling me names and making fun of my name. Which I thought it was really mean so I went and told a teacher and the teacher came out with me and told the girl to stop calling me names. Then the girl said sorry and she walked off.

1.Select one line/phrase/group of sentences that are significant to you. Explain why.
A phrase that I thought was important was "One of them read aloud from a small book, which I told was the girls diary". I dont really think its nice to read someones diary or someone reading it to you because they might have personal things in it. I mean personally I wouldn't read anyones diary unless they want me too.

To think about:
How is ostracism different from other forms of bullying? When does ostracizing or excluding someone from a group become part of bullying?

Ostracism means excluding someone from your group. It becomes part of bullying because you might be talking about the person that is being excluded. Some people have done that to me but I wouldn't care much.
1.What’s familiar about the incident Eve describes?

This is similar when so many people used to hate me because they thought that I was weird. I think now people dont hate me as much.2.What surprised you?
That people hated her when she was fine and that they made her do bad stuff like hear people reading their or someone else's diary to her.
3. How does Eve’s story relate to bullying? Was she bullied? Did she bully? How would you explain her behavior?( perpetrator/bystander/victim?). make sure you justify( back up your answer.)
Eve was getting bullied by getting called names and she was getting mocked. I would say that she is a victim because she was the one that was getting bullied.
Psychologists Michael Thompson and Lawrence Cohen point to the powerful influence of peer groups in guiding our behavior: ‘We all know that groups can go terribly astray in terms of their moral reasoning. Everyone not in the group can be considered an outsider, a legitimate target…It affects every group because we are all prone to that feeling of us versus them and the idea that if you’re not with us you’re against us. Speaking out against a risky, immoral or illegal decision is hard to do because that makes you an outsider yourself’.
4.How did Eve’s need to belong affect the way she responded when another girl was being mocked? Why does her response still trouble her? How do you like to think you would have responded to the incident?
Eve was also laughing at the other girl that was being mocked so that she could be part of the group. The response still troubles her because she cant believe the fact that she did this to the girl. I would have probably not got into this, I would have said that this is not nice.
5. Eve concludes “Often being accepted by others is more satisfying than being accepted by oneself, even though the satisfaction does not last.’ What does she mean?

She means that she is afraid that she wont have friends and she wants people to like her.

Rescuers!

The Courage of Le Chambon

What did you learn from the stories of rescuers? What do they teach us about human behavior?
I learnt that the French people wanted to safe the Jews. They also had a little place were the jews can hide away from the German people. That also the Le Chambon people are very nice to the Jews. They teach us that to them human behavior is very good and bad.

A poem by Sonia Weitz

Which Sonia Wietz poem did you choose? Sum up your annotations, then reflect on parts of the poem that really stood out for you. How can you make a personal connection to the poem? How did it make you feel?
I choose the Victory poem because I thought it was really touching and it was very emotional... What I really thought stood up to me was the first paragraph because it says how much they really had fun dancing together. Also how they at least got to see each other for the last time! I wouldn't really have a connection with this poem but what this poem made me feel was emotional!

1918-1933

What conditions were present that allowed Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party to take control of Germany in 1933?
The conditions that were present in Germany that allowed Hitler and the Nazi Party to take control were many things. First, after losing World War I they were made to pay reparations (Treaty of Versailles) to all the countries that fought against them. This was very difficult for the Germans and took a lot of the countries money. Next, Hyperinflation gave difficulties to Germany and money was worth nothing! Since the money was worth nothing the children would play with the money as if they were bricks/blocks! The world was experiencing a depression and this really effected Germany as well. With the depression and reprations this was too much for germany to take on. Lastly, because of the economic people in Germany couldn't work because they didn't have any money to pay (unemployed). These conditions were just what Hitler needed to make his rise to power. If Hitler could make Germany strong as a Nation, not pay for the war damages, get the Germany Economy going and give everybody jobs the people would be happy and make it easy for him to take power. This is what Adolf Hitler did.

Restrictive Laws in Nazi Germany

1. Who could now be defined as a "Jew"?
Instead a Jew was defined as a person who had 3 or 4 Jewish grandparents regardless of whether that individual belonged to the Jewish religious community.

2. What was meant by "Aryanizing" Jewish Businesses?
Aryanizing means that the Jewish workers and managers were fired from their jobs and the business was taken over by non Jewish people for bargain prices.

3. How were Jews who were professionals (lawyers, doctors etc.) restricted?
Jewish doctors could only treat Jewish people and Jewish lawyers were not allowed to practice law on non Jews.
4. What did Jewish identity cards need to include now?
They had to include the letter "J" in their card. If their names were hard to read or hard to see then the males had to have Israel and females named Sarah as their middle name.

5. What was the "Law for the Protection of the Hereditary Health of the German People" (sum up in your own words)?
The law was about if you wanted to get married then you need a certificate, but if you weren't German blood then you couldn't get married because you wont get the certificate.
